Lileks liked "From Hell." Ahh a small measure of vindication. The two people I saw it with were not impressed. I liked it but never had anyone to discuss it with. The thing that impressed me most was how right they got Victorian England. There's a scene where Johnny Depp is in the bath. Everything in the scene is just right. The shape of the tub, the stove at the foot of the tub, the absinthe spoon, all of it. At that point in the movie it had me. Regardless of the plot, the sense of place was so well done it made the movie.
