Wired carried a story on this over a year ago. That article claimed (and I tend to believe) that although autism is on the rise everywhere, the reason it's so common in California is Silicon Valley and similar enclaves. Autism has a genetic component. The milder often undiagnosed version of autism is called Asperger syndrome. Some of the most classic computer geeks are models for mild asperger. To paraphrase the Wired article 'In Silicon Valley no one will care about lack of social skills or that you've been wearing the same shirt for a week if your code is bulletproof.' So that kind of environment draws an unusually large number of people who are likely to have some tendency toward autism. Then those people start to have kids.
Without a doubt there's also some environmental factor that's causing the rise across the country. I hope they figure it out soon.
