I love
Lileks.
"Iím particularly grateful today for the sacrifice of the soldiers, who allowed me to live in a nation whose Constitution does not permit my child the right to whine for chocolate milk for six straight hours. The EU Constitution will, it seems, at least as I read Article 24: ď(Children) may express their views freely.Ē And these views ďshall be taken into consideration on matters which concern them, in accordance with their age and maturity.Ē I WANT CANDY is now a Constitutional issue. I exaggerate of course, but the EU Constitution gives me the creeps. The more specific the set of rights, the easier it is to deny all others, and infringe on the rights your Eurobetters kindly deign to grant.

Iím doing a Newhouse column on this, and alas I havenít the space to draw all the parallels with the 1977 Soviet Constitution, which I have right before me now. Itís a masterpiece of high-minded hypocrisy, and there are so many passages that mirror the EU Constitution - which of course proves nothing. But one does get the impression that in either case itís the state granting the rights, not acknowledging that you have these rights already and that the state shall promise to get out of the way. Small, tiny, minor point. Almost too small to mention."
It boggles my mind that there are people living in this country who don't get that distinction. As far as I can see the EU constitution is yet another european attempt to use the law to engineer a utopia rather than an enunciation of solid inalienable rights. Let's all keep in mind the various outcomes of previous attempts.

Would someone please take
this up before the SCOTUS? This shit has been going on for years. What fruits the war on drugs and guns hath wrought. Prohibition doesn't work. It's been what, 70 years? Are we that stupid? The tighter you squeeze the worse the problem gets. You end up with people like Al Capone or shit like the death penalty for non-violent crimes.
