Happy independence day.

Now everybody take a minute and appreciate where you live. Our freedoms to say what we want, do what we want, go where we want, and believe what we want, are unprecedented in human history. Here those freedoms are enshrined in our founding documents and defended by the most sophisticated law enforcement and military in human history.

Of all the billions of people that have come and gone on planet earth, we get to live out our lives under one of the best systems humanity has yet devised. Not a bad place to be born. If you're female especially, stop and consider what life would be like without the sexual revolution and the civil rights movement.

Now, as you go about enjoying your freedom to cook meat over an open flame and play with incendiary devices, be careful. Don't put your eye out. Watch where you wave that sparkler. No food poisoning. Revel in the sheer human potential of your freedom. There are many people suffering without it at this very moment. Even 200-some years later, 'live and let live', not a bad life philosophy.
