Let's grab a little bit of perspective here shall we?
More people died over a few weeks due to the August heat and French complacency than died in the 1900 Galveston Hurricane [14,000+ versus 8,000+]. Twenty times as many people died of the heat in one month in Italy, as died in one week of compounded-stupidity and apocalyptic worst-case-scenario old testament style, destruction of New Orleans, [20,000+ versus 1000+.]
Air conditioners are not a secret. You can even build one yourself with a fan, some tubing, a bucket, and ice. Close yourself in a small room, strip down, sponge off and veg. I kinda' doubt that those miles and miles of catacombs were overheated. Medical facilities should be prepared for the unexpected.
Over here it's the law. People have been surviving Texas and Death Valley in August by giving a damn and planning ahead, since the 1800s. But none of that works if the whole country goes on holiday and forgets about grandpa.
We can't control Iraq? The French can't control Paris. Somebody's always on strike blockading the streets, and lighting crap on fire over there. If it's not a dead immigrant kid, it's pissed off garbage haulers, or transport workers. They're always singing about revolution but somehow that corrupt ineffective system never quite changes, because no one who has a job wants to give up a legally mandated 35 hour work week, and civil-servant style job-security.
Europe was still acting like colonial powers even into the early 1950's. Africa, India, the Middle East... Europe, that global community whose moral opinion we're supposed to heed so closely, has their fingerprints all over some of the worst hellholes on the planet today. We must heed the UN, but $2 billion dollars worth of charitable tsunami aid is "too stingy" huh so you want to tax it out of our paychecks?
France was torched and vandalized. Spain and London were bombed. The Netherlands will kick a political refugee and elected leader out of her own home and her adopted country because they "don't want any trouble." But hey look, it didn't work. Europe has been successfully terrorized and it has the potential to turn real ugly real fast if they quit being scared, remember who outnumbers whom, and get mad. The longer you let this kind of nonsense drag on, the more pressure builds and the worse the backlash will be.
Jewish synagogues and cemeteries all over Europe have been desecrated. Jews all over Europe have been beaten. A gay guy who made a critical indy film was openly shot 8 times, had his throat slit, and was then stabbed, in the street by a guy who left a five page "Fuck you from Islam" note pinned to the body with the knife...
Do you remember that monk that set himself on fire? Now why was that a more powerful form of political protest than homicide bombing that deliberately targets collateral civilian school children in pursuit of martyrdom and dozens of insta-renewing virgins to party with in Heaven?
Islam means submission to God's Will, ideally because it's self-obvious. Historically, as interpreted by the guy holding the book in one hand and a sword or a bomb in the other. If Islam wants to classify my liberated pants-wearing opinionated female self as belonging to the "House of War" rather than the "House of Islam," I'm only too happy to agree. I will never submit.
"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch."
"Poverty wants some things, Luxury many things, Avarice all things."
Ideological supremacy both political and religious, is hardwired right into the literal DNA source code of Islam. Islam must find a Luther, have a reformation, and learn to legally seperate a secular state from personal religious faith. It must find a way to tolerate and coexist as equals with other faiths, or it will continue to bump up ever more violently against the rest of the planet. Who believe that their freedom of conscience and liberated way of life is just fine, and doesn't require any outside puritanical commentary or bullying threatening modification.
I refuse to be converted under threat of violence. If you make me choose between you and me, I'll choose you every damned time. Because if God is really peace and love, then a falsely violently extorted confession of faith is the worst lie and the gravest sin. You can't put it off on the fatalism of God's will. You choose to push the button or you don't.
Did you watch the Sopranos? Do you remember how protection rackets, plausible deniability, and terroristic threats work?
"It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: --
"We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that pays it is lost!" - Rudyard Kipling
