I'm starting to think that the assault weapons ban may actually
sunset. Especially considering that the Democratic leadership has put the word out to lay off the gun control issue. Today's vote may very well give several democrats who are up for reelection the flimsy cover that they want to not do anything further. The bill is set to sunset. It will do so unless congress acts. I'm wondering if enough democrats will feel that this can be their token gesture and considering the final vote number of 90-8 they could claim that it's not worth bringing it up again. I think it may depend on how the presidential race goes.

Well it looks like the democrats are nominating the second
least electable of the serious candidates. Lileks certainly doesn't think much of him. Neither do I. USS Clueless is also unimpressed.

I'm underwhelmed by Bush's performance overall, but I am completely convinced that Kerry will fail to match even the limited success that Bush has pulled off. For me the war is issue #1, which is why I'll hold my nose and vote for Bush despite the idiocy of the gay marriage amendment and a host of other issues. Physical safety comes lowest on Maslow's heirarchy. It's highest on my priority list, and like DenBeste, I'm not sure Kerry believes we're even in a war.

John Kerry is apparently waaay
too cool for school. Do you know of ANY job where you could blow off more than half of the meetings for 14 months, then just stop coming to any meetings, and still be employed? I love the quote "Voting is just one small part of being a U.S. senator." Oh really? I think the voters might disagree. Especially with the lovely example of the Patriot Act passing congress without being read. (Kerry voted for it, though chances are he didn't read it either.)

I can't think of a better issue to get voters stirred up than the habitual voting on new laws WITHOUT READING THEM. These are laws that you and I are expected to abide by, and if we don't we can be punished, but the people we elect and PAY ($150,000/ year) to represent our interests in the lawmaking body, DON'T EVEN READ THE FUCKING BILLS. I really don't care what the excuse is, I want my senators and congressmen to personally sit down and read -not skim- every single law before they vote. As far as I'm concerned that's their job.
